Pulso is a Latino-led social enterprise dedicated to raising up and keeping the pulse on nuestra gente. We build deep digital relationships with Latinx folks through their phones in order to transform civic engagement and build political power. 

Pulso attracts and engages Latino folks through our innovative Latino history and news service, via Facebook Messenger, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Twitter and The Pulso Podcast. With this daily relationship and by telling the stories that have shaped our community, Pulso connects U.S.-based Latinos/as/x with our history and encourages subscribers to take action on critical issues, register to vote, and to cast their votes on Election Day.

About the Opportunity


Pulso is seeking a well rounded accounting expert to accomplish the full cycle of AR, AP, and financial processes, with a special focus on GAAP compliance and navigating tax questions. The organization is actively transitioning  from fiscal sponsorship this year. Resilience is critical, as well as attention to detail, since we will be tasked with setting up new accounting and financial structures, and creating and implementing accounting processes for a multi-entity nonprofit organization.

Key Responsibilities 


Here’s what you could expect to do as an Accountant (Freelance): 


  • Support with the preparation and implementation of new accounting processes.

  • Own accounting functions including:

    • Overseeing the General ledger

    • Reconciling accounts payable/receivable

    • Cash receipts

    • Preparing budget forecasts

    • Executing monthly and fiscal year end processes

    • Grant tracking/reporting

  • Prepare and update our Chart of Accounts.

  • Implement and manage a new accounting system.

  • Establish and enforce proper accounting best practices, policies and principles including the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

  • Establish and execute financial management processes including: balance sheets, income statements, budget vs. actual reports, monthly burn rate and and grant financial reports.

  • Manage audits on behalf of Pulso ensuring audits are accurately and promptly completed.

  • Monitor bank accounts and incoming and outgoing transactions.

  • Prepare and file all necessary tax and financial forms ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local tax laws.

  • Establish and maintain electronic fiscal files and records to document transactions.

  • Provide recommendations for process improvement, including improvements to systems and procedure, and initiative corrective actions when necessary.

  • Manage all accounting software, resolving accounting discrepancies.


What we’re looking for:


  • 4+ years of experience with managing full-cycle bookkeeping / accounting processes, ideally at a nonprofit or startup, or experience in another accounting type role managing daily through yearly financial records.

  • 4+ years of experience with major financial / accounting systems (Quickbooks, Xero, etc.)

  • Familiarity with Nonprofit, cost-sharing, and accrual accounting practices

  • Have proven experience with 990 preparation and filing

  • Have an interest in the power of digital media for organizing and social change. Regularly engage – personally or professionally – with many of the following platforms: TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, Facebook Messenger, podcasts, and other streaming shows.


Compensation 


This is a part-time, 4-month freelance role with the potential to renew. The compensation range is $40 - $50 per hour (depending on experience). The number of hours will vary, but will not exceed 30 hours per week (hours may be closer to 30 per week during initial setup).
